A Brief Biography

Lily began belly dancing while spending a year abroad studying medieval history at Oxford University. She loved the camaraderie of the belly dance classes, and promptly founded a belly dance club at Williams College when she returned to the US. After graduating from Williams with a BA in Biology and Medieval History, Lily returned to Oxford to pursue belly dancing, as well as a Master of Science degree in Biological Anthropology. It was at this time that Lily got hooked on performing, first as part of Oxford’s Belly Dance Troupe, Beledi, which performed at Oxford’s famous black tie balls, and later as a soloist dancing at local Middle Eastern restaurants.

Upon her return to the U.S. in 2001, Lily continued performing at clubs and restaurants in the Boston area, including Caprice, Avalon, Karoun, The Middle East, and Tangierino. She has also performed at special events such as “A Night at Casablanca”, a fundraiser for the Joshua Glase Foundation. Lily also continues to perform in belly dance troupes; she currently appears as a member of the Jewels of Jamal.

Lily has taken belly dance lessons with a variety of teachers, and her style shows many different influences. She enjoys dancing to traditional Egyptian music as well as Arabic and Turkish pop. Whatever the type of music, Lily loves incorporating a variety of props - ranging from veil and zills to a sharp sword (or two!) or a large tray full of lit candles. She is also an avid choreographer of both solo and troupe pieces.

Lily is currently enrolled in MIT’s PhD program in Biology, where she researches the regulation of Interleukin-7 Receptor alpha chain expression in memory T cell development (whew!). Lily often practices new choreographies while alone in lab, and feels that her mice appreciate the finer points of Arabic music.
